Cannes-nominated for Un Certain Regard, ‘Onoda – 10,000 nights in the jungle’ is a must see! The French director Arthur Harari has created an extraordinary portrait of a forgotten Japanese soldier who keeps fighting a war that is over and lost. Join us for this special international screening; the spoken language in the film is Japanese, but the subtitles are English as always.
The year is 1944 and Japan is losing the war. Young Japanese soldier Hiroo Onoda is sent to an island in the Philippines just before the American landing. In the jungle he trains a handful of soldiers to join him for ‘the Secret War’ – the war of a small guerilla group that doesn’t give up. For Japan the war is ending, and they are losing. For Onoda, it is not. He keeps fighting for another 10,000 nights, before finally surrendering. – Plot
“This gripping tale of misguided patriotism recreates a vanished set of circumstances via excellent performances and well-tailored cinematic choices.” – Screen International
