☞THE MOVIE:
When Abel learns that his 60-year-old mother Sylvie is about to marry a man in prison, he freaks out. With the help of his best friend, Clémence, he will do whatever it takes to protect her. But meeting Michel, his new stepfather, may well offer him a new perspective…
The Innocent is a film that, despite everything, manages to achieve what it sets out to do. It ends up being an entertaining yet moving film, told with simplicity and grace. There is no pretentiousness in it, it is an honest film. Far from a certain supposedly “intellectual” cinema that nobody really understands, without forgetting the story, with sensitivity and humour, it manages to explore questions whose truth we recognise ourselves in. – Cineuropa
To be sure, the film emphasises laughs and love over suspense, and Garrel directs the material with a breezy confidence that suggests the audience should simply savour the time in the company of such delightfully flawed characters. – Screen Daily
