In the town of Cherbourg, Madame Emery and her daughter Geneviève run a small umbrella shop. Geneviève is in love with Guy, a young mechanic, but their relationship is interrupted when he is drafted to fight in the Algerian War.
Left behind and pregnant, Geneviève is encouraged by her mother to marry Roland, a wealthy jeweller who can offer her stability and security.
