Five years in the making Sebastien Lifshitz’ longterm observation of two unrelated teenagers in a small French town is an illuminating study of human development, and through their personal stories a snapshot of life in France between 2013 and 2018. The screening will be followed by a Q&A with the director in English!
« This new documentary by Sébastien Lifshitz (The Invisibles; Little Girl; Bambi) follows best friends Emma and Anaïs over a five-year period from the time they start secondary school. Both a personal story and a collective history, it chronicles the two girls’ friendship and the transformative teenage years where radical change and first times punctuate daily life, while investigating the social and cultural pressures on France’s young. This unique and fascinating documentary is a gift, getting right to the heart of Emma and Anaïs’s lives. » – Synopsis
‘Picking up every detail and nuance in a naturalistic tour de force, Adolescentes is an engrossing and valuable endeavour, documenting adolescence from a female perspective, informing and entertaining in equal parts.’ – Locarno Film Festival
‘Comparisons to Richard Linklater’s 12-year-long narrative Boyhood are evident, with a mix of melancholy and grace, which is as good a definition of adolescence as any.’ – The Hollywood Reporter
