Fifteen years ago, director Laetitia Carton went to the Grands Bals de l’Europe, in Gennetines. She saw hundreds of people dancing for seven days straight. Today, 29 years after its inception, this famous ball calls out 2,000 people to 8 wooden dance floors for around 15 balls a night. To call it a celebration would be an understatement. At ‘Le Grand Bal’, life becomes pure and raw at once. The beauty of life is on full display in this impeccable documentary. “I cannot find such emotion, friendliness and energy, produced by a community, anywhere else…” says Carton, and you’ll find her claims to be true as you witness this breathtaking documentary, and after get to join in the fun with Paris Bal Folk!
This is the story of a big ball. Every summer, more than two thousand people come from all over Europe, to a small town in the French countryside. For 7 days and 8 nights, people dance again and again, lose the notion of time, defy their fatigue and their bodies. They turn, they laugh, they spin, they cry and sing. In this beautiful documentary, life pulses.
“An accomplished and fascinating piece of work that explores both a specific event and a human activity far too often only practiced or looked at without trying to penetrate its deeper mysteries.” -The Hollywood Reporter
